Wedding Crashers

At The Wedding…

The ceremony itself had been incredibly dull. A bunch of people Hauk didn’t know, and more importantly didn’t care to. He was only there to keep Abyss company and it didn’t help matters that the hybrid also seemed completely disinterested in the whole affair as well. Abyssinians’ two toned eyes had been half lidded and barely focused on the wedding itself… almost as if he were sleeping with his eyes open.

As Hauk had looked around, he noted that they were both getting rather peculiar stares. No one looked anything like Abyss, and so the dragonelf was led to assume that this was all of Diana’s family. Most were from various tiger tribes. There was one older male, a sun tiger with faded stripes who sat a few rows up. He didn’t seem as disdainful about their presence as everyone else… Hauk assumed that he must have been the Uncle Abyssinian and Sienna had mentioned earlier… The older male sighed inwardly, gently nudging Abyss in the arm. The hybrid blinked lazily and glanced down, looking at his partner.

“So… The reception… They’re going to feed us… right? I’d rather not pass up free food.”

Abyss smiled, for the first time in three days, and nodded curtly.

“Aye… You can eat and drink as much as you wish… Lucky for you I remembered to bring a gift…”

He smirked at the smaller male. Hauk huffed and lazily crossed his arms, which was a little difficult in his suit. He wasn’t used to wearing penguin suits… but Abyss had insisted on a tux or a similarly appropriate outfit. Abyss had decided on a tux for himself, a custom made thing that allowed his wings to fit properly without cutting out the back. It made Hauk a little uncomfortable knowing that it had been his own wedding tux way back when… The dragonelf frowned at the thought… He couldn’t imagine how much Abyss must have missed Diana at this very moment… but… If Abyss wasn’t outwardly dwelling on it, neither should he. Instead, he decided to put up the non worried front he always did around his friend.

“Yeh well… They better let us drink… especially having to sit here like this for so long… My ass is falling asleep… I didn’t even know an ass could do that! Besides, I don’t think you should have bothered with a gift… Not after what you did for them already…”

Hauk whispered back with unbridled spite. Abyss frowned, his gaze flickering to Katlyn at the alter and her dress, which he’d been wearing himself only three days before. He sighed softly and shrugged, commenting back in an equally soft tone so as not to disrupt the ceremony.

“I agree with you I suppose… but… despite having to go through that… I still don’t want to be rude…”

“…”

Hauk made a slight face at that. He’d never really understood Abyssinians’ way of being so damn polite all the time…

“What did you get them?”

“… Handcuffs and a whip…”

Both had to cover their mouths to suppress a snort of laughter. Hauk shook his head, grinning so much that he was nearly on the edge of tears trying not to make any noise. He looked over at Abyss and cocked a curiously surprised eyebrow.

“You serious mate?”

“Well… that’s what they get for making me wear a damned dress… But I think it might be best if we left before they open the gifts…”

Abyss knit his brows in concern but clamped down on another snort of laughter. Hauk reeled with glee on the inside, shifting in his seat slightly with a satisfied grin. It was good to have the old Abyss back… and to see him regain his backbone a little. Hauk agreed they should leave before gifts were opened… tho… He’d pay a hundred bucks just to see their faces…

Later At The Reception…

Abyss hadn’t been kidding about the all you can eat and drink thing. There was a huge banquet spread out as you walked in. Delicious foods and wines from different countries were laid out over a large crescent moon shaped table. Hauk dove towards it almost immediately, leaving an amused Abyss to go find them a table. The hybrid picked one near the back and out of the way, as if trying to leave the actual ‘family group’ to itself. Abyss may have been married into the tribe, but since Diana’s death, many of its members had held a deep embedded spite towards him. Only D’s Uncle, Kharl had ever really accept him and their marriage. In fact, it had been Kharl that gave Diana away because her natural father refused… Abyss smiled sadly to himself at the memories. He glanced up in slight surprise when Hauk came back with two large plates of food on one arm and two filled wine glasses cupped in the other by their stems.

“I wasn’t sure what you might like… so I got you a bit of everything…”

Abyss smiled softly and tilted his head in a slight nod.

“Thank you Hauk… You didn’t have to make me up a plate tho…”

“No big deal really… Someone’s gotta feed you cause I know when you get into your slumps you won’t feed yourself…”

The hybrid paused in thought. That had never really occurred to him before… Yet, as he thought back, it was true. When he got depressed, or deeply emerged in a memory, Abyss tended to stop eating completely unless someone forced him to sit down and eat with them… Hauk did that a lot to him… Pulled him away from his own little world to make sure he didn’t make himself sick… Abyss smiled gratefully.

“Aye… I guess so…”

“Hey hey, don’t get all mushy on me… It’s jus food, so eat already y’dummy.”

The taller male nodded and started to eat, enjoying the company far more than the food itself… Although rough around the edges most the time, and unbearably stubborn… Hauk had a charm about him that Abyss couldn’t help but feel comforted by. He smirked to himself and shook his head as Hauk cocked a curious brow and asked about the smile. The dragonelf went off for a moment about how Abyss always gave him these weird little smiles and how he should stop, but that just made Abyss smile more.

“Well now... look who showed up after all… I’m surprised in all honesty that you’d even show your face here Aby.”

Abyssinian tensed and set his silverware down, balling his fists slightly. He frowned a bit and Hauk caught the discomfort right away, looking between his friend and the tall Bengal.

“Alec…”

“The one and only ‘cuz’… I assume Uncle invited you? I sure as hell know I didn’t put your name one the list…”

Abyss hissed softly between clenched teeth but managed to look up at the equally tall male.

“Congratulations to you and Katlyn by the way… The ceremony was lovely…”

“Thanks… At least ours will last, eh? I mean honestly… Yours and Dianna’s was doomed from the start. Know why?”

Abyss tensed and leaned back in his chair as Alec loomed over him, placing a large paw on either side on the chair back so that his golden eyes were locked on Abyss’.

“Because no one can live with a half breed freak like you Abyssinian… All you bring is sorrow… and death.”

Hauk growled and was about to leap over the table when the sound of a hard smack caught his ear and held him still. Alec stared in surprise at the sting on his cheek caused by Sienna’s paw. The young tigress gave her cousin a seething glare and stood beside Abyss with her free paw on his shoulder.

“Leave him alone Alec… Abyss is just as welcome here as any other member of the family… Uncle invited him… so you better respect that.”

Hauk looked over as the sun tiger walked up behind his niece, his wise old eyes narrowed in disappointment at the younger male. Alec growled, baring fang. Katlyn walked up behind her husband, confused by the commotion that had gotten the whole receptions attention. Abyss had sunk back in his chair, his head bowed down to hide his eyes, yet his slumped position showed how defeated he felt, how exposed.

“Why do you bother defending him Sienna? It’s HIS fault Diana’s dead! And his son, Lysander? Where’s he, huh? He let them both die for all we know! I even heard rumor that after D’s death, he turned ga-”

“That’s enough Alec! I will not tolerate you insulting my nephew, nor the memory of my little girl or grandnephew.”

Kharl’s voice boomed with dominance and Hauk knew right away that he was the leader of this pride. Hauk looked down at his partner, his brows knit in sorrow at the tear he saw slip down the hybrids cheek. The older male had no idea that his friend had to go through so much hell with his ‘family’… that he was so shunned… It amazed him that he could even put up with it enough to come here willingly… knowing what abuse he might get in the process… He also understood now why Abyss became so distant when they fought at home… It was just too much rejection for him…

“Uncle! Look at him! He doesn’t belong among our kind… doesn’t deserve to be considered part of this great family… He’s an outsider, tainted… He brings nothing but trouble and muddies our pure blood line… That son of his is a freak too!”

Alec didn’t have a chance to continue before Abyss was on his hooves and had landed a bone cracking punch to the side of the tigers jaw. Alec crashed to the floor with a cry of pain, holding his bleeding mouth. Katlyn shrieked in surprise and drew back while the others murmured in surprise. Abyss glared down at the younger tiger, eye blazing, fangs bared, and bloody fist tightened for another blow. Sienna and Kharl stayed quiet and watched him with sad but understanding eyes. Hauk sat with his mouth slightly agape, not having seen that much violence coming out of his friend.

Abyss leaned down and grabbed Alec by the tux collar, hoisting him up slightly.

“Listen here Alec… It’s one thing to insult me to my face and in front of my friends… But don’t you DARE degrade my wife or my son… Lysander is still out there somewhere… and there’s not a day that goes by that I don’t do something to try and find him… If you ever put them down again… I’ll show you just how deadly I can be… You don’t even know what pain and suffering is you bastard… But I’d be happy to show you some day… just try me.”

Kharl cleared his throat and put a gentle but strong paw on Abyss’ shoulder.

“That’s enough my son… Be the better man and leave only his ego bruised…”

Abyss snarled softly but released the shocked male, standing up straight again. He turned to look at Kharl and Sienna, his eyes suddenly softening and his brows knitting in regret.

“I- I’m sorry I let my anger get the best of me… I’ve made quite the scene and I apologize…”

“Don’t worry about it bro… We understand…”

Sienna smiled softly and stroked Abyss’ cheek, brushing away the tear trail from earlier. Kharl too nodded and smiled lovingly at his ‘nephew’.”

“You’re like a son to me Abyss… just as Diana and Sienna are like my daughters… You always have a family to turn to you know…”

Abyss gave Kharl a grateful smile and nodded. He turned to Hauk.

“… Let’s get out of here Hauk…”

The dragonelf nodded slowly and stood, grabbing up his over coat.

“Yeh, sure man… Let’s go…”

As they turned to leave Alec stood again and growled.

“Wouldn’t matter if you found Lysander anyway y’know Abyss… Homosexuals don’t make proper fathers… Hn… Diana would be disgusted with you…”

Abyss stopped in his tracks, letting out a cut off gasp of shock. This time it was Hauk’s turn to let his fists do the talking, and he did. He slammed Alec back into a table and leaned over him, pinning him on his stomach with his arm caught painfully pressed against his back under Hauk’s weight. All eyes were on the two males, except Abyss who remained turned away, eyes shadowed under his bangs.

Alec gagged and struggled against the pin, but couldn’t get enough leverage to throw Hauk off. He coughed slightly and looked back over his shoulder at the dragonelf.

“A-and… jus who the hell are you supposed to be? T-that lily bastards… bodyguard or something?”

Hauk smiled devilishly, pressing the tigers arm up higher and making him yowl in pain. He looked back over his shoulder at Abyss’s turned form and smirked softly, shaking his head as he looked back down at his foe.

“I’m his date… And you jus made a HUGE mistake in making me mad…”

The older male pushed up hard, smiling maliciously at the sound of breaking bone and let the tiger drop. Alec cried out in pain and clutched his arm. Hauk smirked over him before looking at Kharl and Sienna, nodding his apology. He glanced at the shocked Katlyn and grinned.

“Sorry to have ruined your wedding doll… Looks like you’ll be spending your honey moon at the ER… Next time you want to get out of getting your dress finished and make someone else do it for you… you might want to re think it… eh?”

Hauk walked up to Abyss and gently grasped his friends elbow, looking up into his shadowed face.

“C’mon Abyss… Let’s go home…”

Back At The House…

Hauk threw his coat over the back of the couch, sighing to himself as he was left alone in the living room, Abyss once again having immediately retreated back into the bedroom. He went to the fridge to grab a beer and walked into the room without knocking, pausing as he saw that Abyss was undressing. The hybrid had only gotten his jacket and part of his shirt off, but had stopped midway so that the material still hooked at his elbows… He was crying. The dragonelf frowned and walked up behind him, idly unbuttoning the snaps in the back that brought the material together under Abyss’ wings.

“I’m sorry I embarrassed you like that Abyss… in front of everyone... He jus… He made me so damn mad y’know? I don’t know why… but when he insulted your sexuality like that… I jus snapped. Don’t ask me why… I know that I do the same thing to you all the time… tho... maybe not quite as harshly… I’m trying… y’know? To understand you better… to accept you for everything you are… Just like you’re trying for me… It’s a two way thing, and I get that… I do… but… I don’t know Aby… Maybe I was just being a hypocrite or something… It’s jus… I don’t think about it when I say it… But when he did… it made me so angry, for you. I didn’t want him saying those things… not to you… Hn… I don’t even know if I’m making any sense…”

“… I understand…”

“Do you? Cause I sure as hell don’t… I don’t know why it bothered me that he was calling you gay… I mean… You are… well, ok, bi... but still… you know… And well, I just didn’t want him saying bad shit about you… It pissed me off… and you wouldn’t have defended yourself! I know you! You would have just walked away… and… That’s not right Abyss… I mean hell… I know you’re always strong for everyone else… but you gotta be strong for yourself too… Not just in rage, but in general… y’know?”

“You didn’t have to protect me Hauk…”
“Yes I did…”

“Why?”

“Because… You always protect me… and… I dunno… We’re friends… It’s what you do… You protect each other.”

“Why did you say you were my date?”

Hauk blushed softly, stepping back and drinking down half his beer as Abyss let the rest of the shirt slip off his arms. He watched the hybrid with uncertain eyes.

“I dunno… Cause I wanted to put him in his place I guess…”

“By saying it tho… You just proved to everyone one there that I am in fact gay… and… that you are too… They don’t know you Hauk… they have nothing else but to assume you are now…”

Hauk frowned at that and looked down. He kicked at the rug a bit and shrugged.

“Let them then… I don’t care what they think… We know the truth…”

Abyss trembled slightly and nodded, bowing his head. Hauk looked at him and smiled softly, sighing as he stepped close enough to place a gentle hand on Abyss’ back between the hybrids wings, making him shiver.

“You and I both know that our relationship is a hell of a lot more then that… we don’t fit under any labels… do we?”

Abyss gasped softly and looked up, watching both himself and Hauk reflected in the window. It was raining again, the wet streaking on the glass pane masking his own tears. He nodded again, softer this time.

“No… we’re in a league of our own… Caught between knowing who we are, and having no clue…”

Hauk too watched their reflection for a silent moment.

“…Yeh…”

The dragonelf turned, walking back to the doorway. He paused on his way out and leaned his back against it, swirling the remaining beer in the can as he looked down at it.

“By the way… Even though it was… y’know… weird and all… You looked good, in the dress I mean… Really good actually… So… Don’t feel so bad about it…”

Abyss made a face and let his ears droop, smiling wearily.

“Oh uh… well… thanks… I’ll try not to.”

“However… I much prefer you like this… How you looked in that dress… doesn’t even compare to how good you look right now… Just being you… Tears and all… I- I just thought you should know that… I… I think you look… great… Just like this…”

Abyss gasped and turned to look at Hauk with surprised eyes. But by the time he’d turned around, Hauk was already gone, the door closed behind him and his foot falls receding down the hallway… The hybrid trembled, fresh tears falling down his cheeks, but this time they weren’t of sorrow, but of pure love and gratitude… Abyss crumbled into a seated position on the bed and leaned over, head buried in his paws as he simply allowed the feelings to pour out of him finally; secure in knowing that Hauk was there right in the next room… waiting for him when he was ready to come out from the darkness again…
